Ouch

I was at a fundraiser this evening, waiting in line at the bar, when a nice elderly lady turned around, looked me up and down and politely asked, "Mr. Glover?"

I smell the makings of a good attack ad.

Did you see Riederer's new website, http://www.onlyoutsider.com? It whacks Glover and the rest of the field pretty hard.

Anonymous #2,

Is that the website paid for by attorneys with cases in front of his wife? Isn't it kind of hard to take him claiming to be an outsider after being involved with City and County politics since before my kids were born?

Riederer should never have entered this race. He changed his mind at the last minute, just like when he changed his mind about being a judge. I think he's a nice enough guy, but he is completely undependable. For months he was saying he wasn't going to run, and then he changed his mind yet again.

The fact that he's turning negative so eagerly is not surprising. After all, he said he would run a positive campaign. You can expect the opposite when he makes a commitment.

Gosh Dan, good work parroting Jeff Roe's bogus attacks. Are you going to start sending anonymous mailings like Roe now too?

And here all I said was that the ad whacks Glover and the rest of the field, and you attack me and Al Riederer for no reason. You clearly have hostility issues.

Sorry if I responded strongly, Anonymous #2, but, while Riederer partisans (or any partisans, for that matter) are welcome to use my space to push their candidates, they aren't going to get treated with kid gloves when they do it.

The lawyer thing may or may not be a cheap shot - I tend to think it is fair. We all know that spouses of candidates suffer through a campaign more than the candidates themselves, and it was foolish or wilfully ignorant of Al not to come up with a policy on how to deal with contributions from lawyers who practice before his wife before he decided to join the race (and he had plenty of time, since he flip-flopped about joining for so long). My suspicion is that he knew it stunk to high heavens, but hoped he didn't get called on it.

As for my other points, I don't think there's much room for disagreement. He's no more an "outsider" in local politics than Shields or Glover or anyone else running. It's insulting to the voters for him to suggest otherwise.

It's also sad that he chose to launch a website with the purpose of "whacking" Glover or anyone else. Don't you think one Jeff Roe in the race is one too many?

Finally, you accuse me of attacking you. I don't see where I attacked you, unless you are Al.

What does he say in his TV ad? Something about being a prosecutor investigating fraud and abuse in City Hall but never working there?

I don't think that is a distinction that most voters (myself included) recognize. If you are a prosecutor, you work for da Gummint every bit as much as the mayor, and the city council.

The fact that you worked in one building and not another makes no difference.

You are still, "The Man".

And as a prosecutor, your job is to put voters in jail. Voters don't like people who want to put them in jail.

Dude, do you work at City Center Square?

Because I was grabbing some lunch today and I either saw Glover or you.

I almost said hi.

Must have been Glover or Matt Damon. People get the three of us confused all the time.
